Coach Henk de Jong's SC Cambuur will be playing in the Eredivisie this year for the third year in a row. The Frisian team promoted to the highest Dutch level in 2013 as champions of the Jupiler League and did well there with two twelfth-place finishes in recent seasons. This year the team has had a very difficult season start, including 20 goals against and only two points. But that absolutely does not guarantee PSV a cup victory.
Semi-final in a distant past
Looking at the past, SC Cambuur cannot really be called a cupfighter. The best performance in the cup tournament was in the 1960-1961 season when the club, as VV Leeuwarden (the predecessor of SC Cambuur) reached the semifinals. In it, Ajax proved too strong 7-4. Last season the team was close to repeating that feat, but lost 2-3 to PEC Zwolle in the quarterfinals. SC Cambuur's biggest cup defeat on foreign soil came on August 16, 1996, when it lost 5-0 to sc Heerenveen.
Cup matches between PSV and SC Cambuur
PSV cups against SC Cambuur twice before. In 1979 they won 1-4 in Leeuwarden thanks to goals by Michel Valke, Harry Lubse, Willy van der Kuylen and Willy van de Kerkhof. Jos Peltzer saved the proverbial honor for the then First Divisionist. Four years later both teams faced each other again in Friesland. PSV did not get beyond a 2-2 draw. Jurrie Koolhof and Hallvar Thoresen gave PSV a 0-2 lead, but Jos Peltzer and Ype Anema made a replay necessary.
Replay in Eindhoven
That replay took place eighteen days later in Eindhoven. Again PSV had a lot of trouble with the First Divisionist from Leeuwarden. Thanks to two goals by Anema, Cambuur even made it 2-1 after Koolhof had opened the scoring. PSV eventually won 3-2 thanks to goals by Ton Lokhoff and Hallvar Thoresen.
